Where am I?

Posted by January Harshe on December 16, 2007

In LaLa Land! It’s actually quite nice here…you should join me. OK, really I am trying to figure out what works for me. Here’s what I think. I have been eating a vegan diet for a few weeks, then switched to vegetarian eating raw cheese at home. Then I decided to try a 100% raw diet. It lasted 3 days people! What happened? Well, honestly it is too much, too quick. I wasn’t 100% prepared. So going 100% w/o being ready for 100% isn’t a recipe for success.

We had company this weekend. It was so wonderful to see old friends and catch up. I was not prepared, however, to make raw dishes. I don’t have a dehydrator, juicer, much less, ummm…recipes! That’d be a good place to start. So, I ate healthy foods, but cooked foods. At first I thought, "this isn’t so bad, I can have some cooked foods and just eat mostly raw". Little did I know it would turn into a 24 cooked food eating feast! I started craving "carby" foods. I don’t feel awful, but this is what I have noticed. I already feel bloated again, major gas (I could clear a room!), not as much energy or that "light on your feet" feeling and the biggest difference I have noticed is my baby. She is puking! Not just spitting up like normal, but seriously barfing up a ton of breast milk and worse than before I started this journey. I think the cooked/processed stuff and the cheese are the culprits.

Where do I want to go from here? Well, after a lot of thought and discussing (again) with the hubby we think that raw really is the way to go. Raw Vegan is the goal. The most important thing is to take it one step at a time and to be prepared. Recipes are a good place to start! Knowing what to eat and having great ways to combine that food will help when having a craving (actually I didn’t have any bad cravings the whole 3 days on raw foods!). I want to work into preparing foods with a dehydrator as well. Smoothies, salads, nuts, fruits and veggies are staples and then it’s about re-learning and getting creative. I’m going to be hanging out on raw forums like this one as well. Any support and ideas I can get can and will help! These are amazing people who are inspiring, knowledgeable and don’t’ care about being "different"!

So, back to raw for me. It actually gives me butterflies in my tummy. It’s nerve-wracking and exciting at the same time. Am I going to become a rabbit with buck teeth and a nice fur coat? I mean that’s a huge concern if you didn’t know!

Well, hold on to your panties, because we’re about to go for a ride!

Meal Replacements Shakes

Posted by January Harshe on December 12, 2007

I’ve been researching a raw vegan diet for a few days now. I have decided to go completely raw. So, in my last post I lied. Not really, but I did change my mind. What are you gonna do? We were surfing the web and looking at different meal replacements available. We went through the ingredients of all of them, even the "natural" ones. Basically, they are all crap. I don’t care what they tell you, they are no good. Sorry, get over it! Soy Protein Isolate is just not good for you no matter how you cut it. You can read why at Dr. Mercola’s site, because I just don’t have time to spell it all out for you. (Hey, a moment w/o one of the 3 kids on me are few and far between!)

You can do a "meal replacement" by yourself that will benefit your body much more than the scientifically proven a million times and then some that are available on the market. Why don’t people do this? Laziness. That’s right, people are lazy. They rather have a scoop of crap than take the time to peel an orange and put it in a blender. Maybe, it’s not laziness, but still hoping for that magic pill, or in this case the magic fake chocolate powder! They all seem to have their own patented blend of something. Be honest, you have no idea what that really is and they aren’t going to tell you!

If you want a meal replacement or a something to make sure you are getting better ingredients or whatever the reason, DO IT YOURSELF. The only way to know what is in you are eating is to make it in your own kitchen. Buy the food, prepare the food, eat the food and love it! You can make the most incredible, nutritious shakes on your own. I would personally invest in a Vitamix! They are worth every penny. You can make raw, whole fruit veggie and fruit smoothies, soups, dips, nut butters, milk and the list goes on! I use mine a couple times a day! It will change how you eat.

So, stop being lazy, or whatever other excuse you have handy and make yourself something whole, raw and yummy!

H2O

We all know we should drink plenty of water, right? Then why is that I know people who only drink tea and soda all day? They don’t have one drop of water! How can that be? What is that doing to their body? It seems everyone recommends 8 full glasses or 64 oz. per day. Are you drinking that? You can find info about how much water to drink at places like here, but you know what? Use your head! I need to coin that term! Are you thirsty? Are you too hungry? Ask yourself if you have had enough water today!

What kind of water are you drinking? I don’t know about you, but I just do not trust tap water. Have yours tested… you might be surprised. I love drinking distilled water. Some friends of ours turned us on to drinking distilled water (in glass if you can) a few years ago. It’s the purest water you can get. Don’t you only want pure things going into your body. I do. I’m sure there is info about distilled water that is for and against it. Just drink good water and get enough!
