I feel like everywhere I go lately, the chemical-laden scent of cigarette vapors seek out my nostrils. Why is that? I’m just minding my business and next thing I know, I’m breathing in someone else’s second-hand smoke, which is actually worse than inhaling it first-hand.

I remember learning that the reason why is that when someone is inhaling it first-hand, the heat from the lit-up tobacco will neutralize the different substances in the cigarette, while the smoke that drifts away into someone else’s lungs hasn’t been totally heated to the same temperature. That makes second-hand smoke sound wonderful, huh?

But when someone says they want to smoke some weed, I understand why. They want to get high. I don’t, but obviously, they do. What’s the point with cigarettes? Why do people start out smoking? What are they trying to accomplish? Maybe it’s to smoke more than one cigarette at a time like this winner to the left. Or maybe it’s the cool thing to do. I don’t know.

What I do know is that cigarettes contain a lot more than tobacco. Take a look at these wonderful ingredients:

-Benzene (petrol additive)

-Formaldehyde (embalming fluid)

-Ammonia (toilet cleaner)

-Acetone (nail polish remover)

-Tar (yummy)

-Nicotine (addictive drug and an insecticide)

-Carbon Monoxide (car exhaust fumes)

-Arsenic (rat poison)

-Hydrogen Cyanide (gas chamber poison)

What in the world is cool about inhaling this stuff? Not to mention the possibility of pulmonary diseases like emphysema, strokes, heart attacks, Beurger’s disease (this is where your fingers and toes eventually need to be amputated because blood stops circulating in those areas). You get yellow, rotting teeth, yellowed fingernails, and you smell like a raunchy chimney! Not good!

So, if you’re into being cool, and you smoke, then just call me the biggest nerd you’ve ever met.

I’m okay with it. Really.
